Masque Corbeau

This crow is a project that I have in mind for many years now, since my first leather creation in 2007. It dealt with a thornmail in black leather that I never published on this blog because I though it was not finished enough considering the ambition I had at start. The character that wore it was a kind of raven warrior, tribal and gothic at the same time. But this article is not about this character, I was thinking that I would finish all of this by adding a little sparkle.

The "Birdy Birdy" project and all the components, accessories and histories that constitute it will be the perfect way to write many articles
Thinking about the character that I described previously, called Santo, and the growing need to make it real, an entire story came to me, and then, another character was created : Arkan. They both share similarities, like twins, and both are picturing a raven skull in its own style. But the story didn’t stop here, because a third character appears. I will say more in the future, so that’s how grew in my head, what could be a script for a fantasy movie. Each time I think about it, I’m wondering that it could be a damn good movie!

Ok so I come back to reality. Because, unless Guillermo Del Toro, fellow reader of my blog, decide to produce the film, there is almost no hope that you will be able to see it one day. Meanwhile, I was thinking about resuming the project and create those three characters. Maybe when this step will be finished I would shoot a teaser featuring all of them. One thing at a time.

Let’s talk about the mask again, it is the main accessory of those characters, the most emblematic. I wanted to be inspired by birds of prey and ravens, giving it a skull appearance of course but also more organic traits like an expressive and wrinkled skin. It also to adapt it to a morphology that is between human and bird. The idea is not really to make a humanoid character as I wanted it to be closer to the man, wearing a bird skull as a helmet.

Here is the first step. The sculpting of the plastilina mask (the plastilina is a kind of plasticine made for molding, which has the asset of never drying and being re-usable)

After the sculpting comes the molding. As I wanted to it to be in resins, I made the mold in silicone (RTV 121), then covered with a resin layer. (I am preparing a tutorial focusing on the making of masks by re-working this project, so you will have more details in the future).

Below the first that I painted, with brush and airbrush : This one is in a kind of skull with raw bones.

Kudos to Mary Liz ( http://www.mariliz.net ) for the studio and her collaboration on the pictures.

Two other versions with different styles will follow along with costumes and accessories of the characters that come with.

So Guillermo, will you decide yourself to give me a hand so we can make this movie?
